There are many things to detest about living in the internet age, but there are joys as well – and one of them is certainly the way in which we can get to know people from all over the world who we would never otherwise have encountered. Lorrie Farrelly belongs to a fabulous indie author support group called eNovel Authors at Work, which believes in ‘paying it forward’ and helping each other. I would never have picked a Western romance set in the American Civil War to read either – but I promise you, the two ‘Terms of’ books I’ve read so far have been a joy, and have introduced me to a whole new world. Let’s see what Lorrie has to share with us. Over to you, Lorrie!

Lorrie.FarrellyWhen I was a kid, how I loved the sci fi/fantasy anthology television program The Twilight Zone! At the time, I didn’t realize how fortunate I was to be exposed to the work of some of the most brilliant and imaginative writers of the day: Rod Serling, Ray Bradbury, Charles Beaumont, Jerome Bixby, Richard Matheson, Earl Hamner, Jr. All I knew was that the fascinating, compelling, sometimes disturbing, sometimes deeply romantic stories would always surprise me, sometimes send a chill down my spine, and just as often touch my heart. I could hardly wait for each week’s episode.

Years later, when an editor dismissively told me, “Don’t write paranormal thrillers or paranormal romance; nobody reads it,” I was appalled. She might as well have said, “Nobody reads imaginative fiction” or “Nobody reads thrillers.” After all, what better than the impossible to reveal the possible? The best paranormal, sci fi, and speculative stories show who we are as human beings, what we fear and what we value, how we treat one another, and how love transforms us. They reveal our best natures and our worst, our foibles and our heroism. Time-travel thrillers, fantasy, and stories of the unexplainable and impossible let us experience second chances and do-overs – fictional ones, of course. Still, they fascinate and inspire us, ultimately giving us cause for optimism and hope.

If I could speak to that editor now, I’d say, “You couldn’t be more wrong. Everyone loves a good story!”

When I began writing Timelapse, I wanted to recapture the suspense, twists, turns, and deep, heartfelt emotion that made those Twilight Zone stories so gripping and stirring. I especially liked the idea that one man’s attempts to change history for the better might not have the outcome he expected, especially if he believed the end justified any means necessary to achieve it. It is these unforeseen possibilities that propel our hero, Professor Alex Morgan, into a dangerous, unpredictable world he scarcely recognizes, but also the one in which he discovers his true strength of heart and passion.

Timelapse COVER with 2 medalsThe accidental death of his beloved wife devastated Alex Morgan; his only solace is a profound bond with his son. Suddenly his life is shattered again when a chance discovery propels him into a world gone horribly, terrifyingly wrong. His only ally: a reckless young freedom-fighter, Jessica O’Neil.  Jessie resists her dangerous attraction to Alex, for she sees him as a man who’s clearly crazy, literally in a world of his own. Nevertheless, she is drawn to his passion and his desperation, and he to her courage and commitment. Depending on each other to survive, they must find a way to prevent a terrible crime from taking place – a crime that plunged both their worlds into nightmare – over one hundred years before. To have a future, they must somehow find their way to the past!

Timelapse was awarded First Place in Time Travel in the 2014 Cygnus Awards for Sci Fi and Speculative Fiction. It was a gold medallist in the Mystery/Suspense category of the 2014 Authors’ Cave Annual Book Awards, and an Award Winner in the 2014 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards.

LORRIE FARRELLY is the author of a Western historical romance trilogy, contemporary romantic thrillers, Western romance short novellas, and sci fi/paranormal romantic thrillers. A graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Northwestern University, she’s been a Renaissance nominee for Teacher of the Year, a ranch hand at Disneyland’s Circle D Ranch, and a “Jeopardy!” television quiz show champion. Two of her books, TERMS OF SURRENDER and TIMELAPSE, won 2014 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards, and all her novels have been awarded Readers’ Favorite 5 Stars. TIMELAPSE is also a 2014 Cygnus Awards First Place in Time Travel winner, and a 2014 Authors’ Cave Annual Book Awards gold medalist in Mystery and Suspense. Lorrie and her family live in Southern California.

Great post, Lorrie and Jenny! What was that editor thinking? I love paranormal stories, both thrillers and romance… and I adored The Twilight Zone as well 🙂 Well done for the award for Timelapse! That’s brilliant!

Ah, Lorrie…My favorite programs were “The Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits.” On my website, I mention the TV shows as having influenced my path as a writer. Timelapse sounds a lot more exciting than my paranormal romances. I look forward to reading your book, which is on my Amazon Wish List.

So happy that you’re part of eNovel Authors at Work!

I am fascinated by the paranormal, and yet I think the last paranormal type romance I read was Lady of Hay by Barbara Erskine. (Would that qualify in this genre?) And I loved that.

Maybe I should check out some more!

Thanks for your comments, Rosie. Your books are lovely, and you have such a wonderful sense of humor. I know how hard it is to keep up on reading while we’re writing as well. I hope you’ll get a chance to read some more paranormal romance. There are terrific stories out there!

I’m another one who loved Twilight Zone and I love good stories, no matter how they’re told. Mind you, Paranormal, Fantasy and SciFi are my favourites and if they include romance that’s a bonus. I have Timelapse on my tablet and now can’t wait to get into it. Congratulations on the awards, Lorrie.
